Korean cosmetics exports to Australia reached $166 million in 2025, up 48.7%, and $103 million in the first half of 2026 (MFDS 2025, H1 2026).
What Australia requires
No product approval for cosmetics, but the importer registers with AICIS and every ingredient is accounted for. Here is who does what.
AICIS registration
The Australian business that imports cosmetics registers with AICIS before importing, and renews for each registration year, 1 September to 31 August. It registers the business, not each product.
Every ingredient categorized
Each industrial chemical in the product must fit an AICIS category, such as listed on the Australian Inventory, and records are kept for 5 years. Our full INCI list is the starting point.
Ingredient labeling standard
Ingredients in descending order by mass or volume, color additives last, on the container, or on the product when there is no container.
Sunscreen can be a therapeutic good
Primary sunscreens, and some secondary sunscreens, are therapeutic goods that must be in the ARTG before sale. Other secondary sunscreens are sold as cosmetics.
Cosmetic or therapeutic good
Some skin products count as therapeutic goods regulated by the TGA instead of cosmetics. AICIS has a decision tool to check each product before you import.
Duty and GST
Skincare under 3304.99.00 has a 5% general rate, and Korean originating goods are free under KAFTA. GST of 10% is paid at the border.
